Overview

 

We are now seeking to recruit to a Consultant Medical Psychotherapist to take responsibility work within the Specialist Psychological Services within the Trust. You will work alongside colleagues and input medical psychotherapy expertise towards the continuing development of a high quality psychotherapy services within the area, provide consultation, liaison and supervision and ensure there is a medical perspective.

You will take on the role of psychotherapy tutor jointly with your colleague Consultant Medical Psychotherapist to assist training and supervision of core and higher trainees. Additional Information

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for the Republic of Ireland. The basic salary range for this post is euros €217,235 to €261,051 Euro’s per annum plus a further euro 26,672 per annum available in Commitment Awards.

The Psychotherapy Service

The Psychotherapy Service aims to provide a specialist outpatient clinical service to the whole resident adult population of Munster (Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford).  In addition a small number of HSE staff from neighbouring districts are treated, who cannot for reasons of confidentiality be treated by their own psychotherapy service.

Patients are referred within the hospital and primary care.

The majority of patients are in once/week long-term individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy for up to 18 months.  Group therapy and brief psychotherapy are also provided.  The service is targeted at those patients who need specialist psychotherapy because their difficulties are too complex or too time consuming to be effectively treated by the primary care or general psychiatric services.

Specific Duties

a)       It is anticipated that the post-holder will be leading at least one therapy programme. 

b)       The post holder will work closely with the Personality Disorder Outreach Service, primarily offering a consultation/supervision service to other psychiatrists and allied health professionals and to mental health teams including inpatient ward teams. 

c)       The post holder will have a very small personal caseload (preferably brief treatment) and supervise others seeing individual patients for dynamic psychotherapy, particularly trainee psychiatrists.

d)       Supervise staff doing assessments (at least one supervision group per week), and see some of the more complex, high-risk patients for assessment (one to two new patients per week).

e)       Psychotherapy Tutor (responsible for postgraduate psychotherapy medical education to the service) (1.5 PAs)

f)        Work alongside colleagues and input medical psychotherapy expertise towards the continuing development of high quality psychotherapy services within the area.

g)       Work alongside the Personality Disorder Outreach Service to provide consultation, liaison and supervision, and ensure there is a medical perspective.

h)       Supervise and carry out individual assessments of complex patients, and ensure that assessment systems within the service are informed by an up-to-date medical perspective.

i)         Provide individual psychotherapy for appropriate service users (mainly brief therapy 16-24 sessions) and supervise trainees doing individual psychotherapy.

j)         Alongside the CBT Medical Psychotherapy colleague, provide medical psychotherapy leadership for the district, addressing the needs of the whole population including those from minority ethnic communities who are at present under-represented in referrals to the service.

k)       Undertake the role of Psychotherapy Tutor for the junior psychiatry trainees on the core and higher training rotation scheme. 

l)         Develop the core and higher level psychotherapy training programme and curriculum to meet the needs and expectations of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, HEEM/HSE.

m)     Be an active member of a Personal Development Plan peer group (PDP) and keep up to date with the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

n)       Actively participate in local and Trust-wide educational activities.

o)       Participate actively in Trust-wide forums, where appropriate and as required by the Head of Service.

These duties are an outline of the main duties of the post.  The post holder may be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade, and is encouraged to develop special interests in agreement with the Head of Service/Head of School/Clinical Director.  Any changes to clinical commitments would include a review of the timetable and would take account of the experience of the post-holder and the need for any additional training. 

 

The content of this post will be reviewed in consultation with the post-holder when necessary and in line with service and training needs.

 

Leadership

 

a)       The post holder will be part of the management team for the service and will be expected to contribute and assist the Head of Service in operational management, business planning and developing a strategic vision for the service.

b)       Represent the Service in Trust-wide, local and national forums as required by the Head of Service.

c)       Take an active part in Personality Disorder Task Groups to coordinate  Trust wide  training  and be involved in  other committees relevant to the Personality Disorder Pathway.

 

Teaching Commitments

 

·       regular commitments to ward based teaching of undergraduates.

·       participation in the lecture programmes for 2nd and 4th & 5th year medical students.

·       teaching of other groups as required including other specialty juniors and specialist nurses.

 

Job Plan

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, the Operational Medical Director and Lead Psychiatry: Psychotherapy Consultant, on behalf of the Trust’s Medical Director, based on the provisional timetable. This will be signed by the Chief Executive and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment.

It will be reviewed at 3 months & thereafter annually or at any time, but no less than 3 months after a previous review, as requested by the appointee, Operational Medical Director or Clinical Lead & adjusted accordingly to the agreement of both parties.

Essential Requirements

This post is open to doctors who hold Registration as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Registrar of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of Psychiatry: Psychotherapy

Office Accommodation

The post holder will undertake administrative work associated with their clinical and other professional duties.  Adequate time and facilities for clinical administration, including appropriate office space, secretarial support and access to a personal computer, software & internet access, will be available.

Service Provision and Cover during Absences

 

The consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the service allowing for appropriate delegation for the training of his/her staff.

 

He/she must be available by telephone and able to attend the hospital in a timely fashion when on-call (40 minutes journey time).

 

Consultant staff must ensure that services are covered during his/her planned absences. Where fixed commitments need to be cancelled during planned absences appropriate notice (8 weeks) must be given. Absences must be co-ordinated with other consultant staff in the specialty to ensure senior cover is always available.


Management Responsibility

All Consultants are required to attend the monthly Directorate Meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate. As part of the Consultant Team, the consultant  will offer mentoring support and lead the existing clinical team through; joint clinics, one-to-one support, individual case management and complex cases, identifying development needs and suggesting CPD (Continuous Professional Development) opportunities and responding to clinical enquiries via e-mail and telephone.
