in terms of professional career development & job satisfaction.
Overview
Applicants are invited for a
consultant histopathologist post arising as a result of increasing demand and
one incumbent consultant moving to part time. The successful applicant will
join a small, affable and well regarded team comprising three full time and one
part time consultant based in the Munster region, but there is an increasing
move towards working as part of a network with other hospitals in the region.
At present the hospital offers a
general histopathology and cytology service across most specialties. No
cervical cytology is undertaken and no specialist renal or medical liver
biopsies are reported. Lymphoma reporting is undertaken in conjunction with the
specialist lymphopathologists. There is expected to be a move towards more
subspecialised reporting in the future, and a strengthening of ties across the
the region, which allows an interesting degree of flexibility to the successful
candidate in developing their career. The laboratory is fully accredited, and
is well staffed with an entertaining and motivated workforce. There is a same
day immunocytochemistry service, and the department meets all key performance
targets.
The University hospital provides
integrated acute and community services across the region. The acute hospital
provides a full complement of secondary care including cancer services,
emergency care, maternity and paediatric services. It is a designated Cancer
Unit and Trauma Unit.
Munster offers a fantastic
combination of coastline and countryside, so the famous surfing beaches of
Stradbally Cove, Co Waterford, Glasheen Beach, Loop Head, Co Clare, Dunworley,
Co Cork, Nun's Beach, Ballybunion, Co Kerry, Ladies' Cove, Dunmore East, Co
Waterford, Trá Ban, Great Blasket Island, Co Kerry, Garinish Beach, Beara, Co
Cork. and the beautiful Parks are on your doorstep. Munster also boasts
excellent local schools and vibrant theatres in the region..
Applicants must be fully
registered with the IMC (Specialist Division) and hold FRCPath or equivalent.
Please note that full IMC
registration and license to practice is an essential for this role. If you do
not currently have IMC registration, but you are in the process of applying,
please use the supporting information section of the application form to provide

The majority of specimens
received in the department are small biopsies and skins. Major resections received are small and large
bowel, breast and testis (for benign and malignant disease), hysterectomy and
oophorectomy (for benign disease and low grade endometrial tumours). More
complex surgery such as head and neck, thoracic, upper GI, prostatectomy,
cystectomy and nephrectomy, high grade endometrial tumours and malignant
ovarian tumours is carried out at other University Hospitals in the region and
the department does not receive these specimens.
The workload of the department is
shared equally amongst the consultants.
New cases are allocated on a daily basis with each consultant having one
day a week without new cases to clear difficult cases or use for SPA activity
(see timetable below).
The hours of work are flexible as
long as the department is staffed by at least two pathologists during
laboratory opening hours (9 – 5 Monday – Friday).
The MDT workload is shared as
equally as possible, with a lead pathologist for each MDT – There are MDs in
breast, upper and lower GI, skin, urology, lung and gynaecology. In the absence
of the lead pathologist one of the other pathologists will cover to maintain
