receive great international acclaim & recognition throughout the world,
doctors with experience and training in Ireland typically enjoy great success
in terms of professional career development & job satisfaction.
Overview
We are looking to recruit a
highly motivated consultant, accredited with CCT (or within 6 months of CCT
date) in Virology, for this 10 PA role. (subject to negotiation)
The post-holder is expected to
work particularly closely with the Haematology team with respect to the
Transplant Infection service. The post is based on the main site but the
post-holder may be asked to work on and provide support at the secondary site in
if required.
Both sites have modern
laboratories and equipment. The Microbiology and Virology laboratories at the
hospital were completely refurbished recently.
The Specialist Virology Centre
(SVC) within the Microbiology Department is a member of the Clinical Virology
Network and was completely refurbished in 2007. In 2017 430,200 tests were
performed, of which 137,300 were molecular assays. About 30% of specimens are
from primary care.
The department delivers a
clinical service from the laboratory, on the wards and at multidisciplinary
meetings. The patient mix at the hospital is one of the most complex of any
teaching hospital in the HSE and strive to offer as bespoke a service as possible
for our most critically ill infected patients, whilst maintaining the highest
standards of antibiotic stewardship. The laboratory fields dozens of calls a
day and, as a recent survey revealed, our advice on clinical management of
infected patients is highly regarded. They provide a laboratory-based ward
liaison Infection Control service and also offer an out-of-hours on-call
service for processing and clinical advice.
Laboratory services at the
Hospital – including Microbiology and Virology - are provided by Viapath LLP a
Joint Venture of which a nearby University is an equal partner. The Laboratory
service is accredited and has been recommended for accreditation under the ISO
standard.
The current Consultant
Virologists and one Specialty Trainee, report on an ever increasing workload
(~150,000 specimens per year) of increasing complexity and requiring
sophisticated laboratory processing and interpretation.
The routine diagnostic work includes a large
laboratory that includes general, hepatitis and retrovirus serology. Viral
serology is performed on bespoke TECAN plate-based EIAs for routine serology,
Abbott Architect and VIDAS for urgent serology and InnoLIA for immunoblot.
Molecular based real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests include both
in-housed developed qualitative and quantitative assays in addition to
commercial assays. Semi-automated sequence analyses include antiretroviral
resistance, HIV-1 CCR5 tropism and hepatitis B antiviral resistance testing
using.
General microbiology serological tests sent to the
combined Infection Sciences department are carried out in virology. In
addition, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae testing is carried
out by Hologic’s TMA technology and routine Candida
auris DNA by in-house developed PCR in virology.
Please note that full IMC registration and license
to practice is an essential for this role. If you do not currently have IMC
registration, but you are in the process of applying, please use the supporting
information section of the application form to provide an update about the
status of your IMC application.
Candidates without IMC registration at the time of
