The Department
Overview
The Department of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology is managed within the Women’s and Children’s Directorate. The
Specialty Lead Consultant is managerially responsible to the Clinical Director
for Women and Children and the Directorate Manager.
Obstetrics has delivered some
outstanding results. Whilst the hospital has historically had low SB rates
(4.2/1000 over the 4 years prior to 2014) there was scope for further
reduction. The hospital therefore implemented an evidence-based growth
assessment protocol from Jan 2015 that further reduced the corrected stillbirth
rate to a very low level of 0.8/1000 (88% reduction) and maintained. This
will be one of the biggest reductions in SBs experienced anywhere in the
country.
The survey of women’s experiences
of maternity services (as part of the National Patient Survey Programme)
reported that for questions pertaining to staff in the labour and birth part of
the survey achieved the highest score of the HSE hospitals included for 6 of
the 8 questions, and also had the highest score overall in this section.
The department offers a wide
range of inpatient and outpatient gynaecology services, including one stop
postmenopausal bleeding clinics, outpatient procedures including Novasure
endometrial ablation and polypectomy, and pelvic pain clinics.
The department was rated as
