Overview
The post is for a Full
Time General Consultant Radiologist to work at our clients HSE hospital. The post will comprise of a total of 10 PAs
including on call cover for Radiology out of hours and weekends on a 1:9 rota.
You would be joining a team of 9.6 WTE consultant radiologists.
This post is most suited
to a candidate who has extensive experience in cross sectional imaging
including oncology reporting and who is competent in delivering a wide range of
services across all modalities including relevant basic interventional procedures
such as drainages and biopsies. Preference will be given be to candidates who
are already in a similar job.
This is a replacement
post to support the increasing cross sectional workload commitments in imaging.
There would be opportunities to develop subspecialist interests in a number of
areas including cardiac imaging, chest, gynaecology, head and neck imaging and
paediatrics.
Applicants are also
expected to have wide experience of general radiology, and contribute to the
general work load of the department.

Duties of the post
holder
The successful appointee
will be expected to have a wide range of reporting competencies, which
complements the skill mix of the existing Consultant workforce. The appointee will be required to share the
general reporting work load with other colleagues and partake in the on-call
rota. On call commitments are based at the hospital where the post holder will
be expected to participate in a 1:9 rota providing General Radiology cover out
of hours and during the weekend. All Imaging can be viewed at home using a
dedicated broadband facility provided by the Trust. Plain film reporting and other General
Radiology commitments will be reflected in the job plan.
This is a replacement
post to complement the existing Consultant workforce due to the general
increasing workload in cross-sectional Imaging.
The appointee will be expected to provide high reporting standards in a
range of CT and MRI examinations including oncology imaging.

Department
Our client currently
have 2 CT Scanners – a Phillips Brilliance 64 Slice CT Scanner and a Philips
Ingenuity 128 Slice Scanner. Both scanners are equipped with all advanced
software packages including ‘I dose modulation’.
MRI is provided by a
Siemens Avanto scanner and a mobile MRI scanning service 8 days per month.
The department has had a
business case approved for the purchase of a 2nd static MRI scanner and a
replacement CT scanner and is currently in the procurement phase of this
project.
Nuclear Medicine has a
GE Infinia gamma camera.
The department provides
a full range of ultrasound examinations using Philips, GE and Toshiba
machines.
The Breast Unit provides
a screening and symptomatic service and is fully digital in all areas. The HSE
Breast Screening Programme is based at the hospital, with a separate screening
unit close to the town-centre, and two mobile units cover the extensive rural
area.
The department currently
has Care Programme, which is well established, with integrated RIS and digital
reporting system together with electronic ordering/vetting. Voice recognition is also widely used by the
consultant radiologists. The trust is
part of a project, a Munster region scheme designed to improve and develop
collaborative working across the region and is planned to go live with a new GE
PACS system as part of this project.
The department has a
mature programme of role-extension and extended-day working. MRI, CT and US
provide a 7 day service.
Radiographers
participate in plain film reporting for appendicular MSK and chest x-rays. 4
reporting radiographers are currently being trained in plain film and MRI
lumbar spine and knee reporting. Radiographer breast screen reading, ultrasound
and stereo core biopsy is well established.
Most general ultrasound
and all obstetric and vascular ultrasounds are performed by sonographers.
The department is part
of the Hospital Radiology Training Scheme. We have 1 full time equivalent
Speciality trainee, whose seniority is usually at Year 4 or above and who
participates in the on call rota. Teaching at all levels is encouraged.
This teleradiology
service covers the majority of the CT examinations performed between 9.30pm –
7.00am on all days including weekends, thus minimising disruption and radiology
work load of On Call Consultant Radiologists. The hospital also have a range in
insourcing and outsourcing strategies to cope with the increasing demand in
imaging.
Standard Duties and responsibilities
Teaching Commitments
• regular
commitments to ward based teaching of undergraduates.
• participation
in the lecture programmes for 2nd and 4th & 5th year medical students.
• teaching
of other groups as required including other specialty juniors and specialist
nurses.
Job plan
A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, the Operational Medical
Director and Lead Radiology Consultant, on behalf of the Trust’s Medical
Director, based on the provisional timetable. This will be signed by the Chief
Executive and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment.
It will be reviewed at 3 months & thereafter
annually or at any time, but no less than 3 months after a previous review, as
requested by the appointee, Operational Medical Director or Clinical Lead &
adjusted accordingly to the agreement of both parties.
Proposed - (subject to revision)
Reporting of all cases is pulled from a general
list – and CT/MRI cases will be reported by the most appropriate radiologist,
according to sub-specialty interest.

This is only a proposal and the relative time by
modality within the job plan will depend upon specialty interest, and
requirement of the service. The time allocated to supporting professional
activities (SPA) may be reviewed at 6 months and at the annual appraisal and
job-planning meeting with the clinical director.
The appointee will be required to participate in
general plain film reporting, which is included in the job plan.
On Call
The on-call commitment will be 1 in 9, category A,
and appointees will be required to participate in the on-call service. If
appointed on a part-time basis, on-call will be pro-rata.
Requirements
This post is open to doctors who hold Registration
as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Registrar of Medical Practitioners
maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of Clinical
Radiology.

Office accommodation will be provided for the
appointee.
Management Responsibility
All Consultants are required to attend the monthly
Directorate Meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in administrative
duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate. As part of the
Consultant Team, the consultant will
offer mentoring support and lead the existing clinical team through; joint
clinics, one-to-one support, individual case management and complex cases,
identifying development needs and suggesting CPD (Continuous Professional
Development) opportunities and responding to clinical enquiries via e-mail and
telephone.
