Clinical Duties
1. To undertake high quality, patient centred,
consultant led obstetrics and gynaecology services. This includes general
antenatal and gynaecology clinics at both the Hospital and at other sites,
colposcopy clinics, gynaecology, antenatal and postnatal ward rounds, cover for
the maternity day assessment unit and acute gynaecology and also undertaking
operative gynaecology lists and elective Caesarean section lists.
2. Experience in providing leadership for junior medical and wider clinical
team on the gynaecology ward and labour ward with proactive consultant input to
the care of women and their babies is essential to the post.
3. To actively contribute, to the development and updating of
polices/guidelines, and supervision of appropriate audit. To ensure proper
delegation to and training of junior medical and nursing/midwifery staff.
4. The post holder will be expected to support the Clinical Director in
delivering the risk
management strategy in Gynaecology
5. The post holder will share responsibility with all the consultants in the
Department in providing consultant presence on the delivery suite, undertaking
dedicated clinical sessions each week, including providing some additional
cover for colleagues annual leave. It is a key aim of the division to increase
consultant presence on the delivery suite in line with the recommendations from
‘Safer Childbirth’ and the Quality Standards.
6. To be fully involved with the teaching and training of medical staff within
the Department and to work closely with the RCOG College Tutor in this respect.
To take part in the induction programme for junior medical staff and to
participate in GP training. To participate in the teaching of medical students.
7. To participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff - if needed
8. To participate in the Consultant on call rota for obstetrics.
9. All consultants within the department share the responsibility for
undertaking serious incident investigations using root cause analysis.
Experience in risk management would therefore be an advantage.
10. To undertake administrative and managerial duties associated with the post,
including attendance at and contributing to departmental meetings.
11. To participate in consultant appraisal and
register with the RCOG CME programme.
12. To observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures and to follow the
Standing Orders and Financial Instructions of the Trust.

Job Plan
A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, the Operational Medical
Director and Lead Obs & Gynae Consultant, on
behalf of the Trust’s Medical Director, based on the provisional timetable.
This will be signed by the Chief Executive and will be effective from the
commencement date of the appointment.
It will be reviewed at 3 months & thereafter
annually or at any time, but no less than 3 months after a previous review, as
requested by the appointee, Operational Medical Director or Clinical Lead &
adjusted accordingly to the agreement of both parties.

Requirements
This post is open to doctors who hold Registration
as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Registrar of Medical
Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of
Clinical and Obs
& Gynae.
Office Accommodation
Office accommodation will be provided for the
appointee.
Management Responsibility
All Consultants are required to attend the monthly
Directorate Meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in administrative
duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate. As part of the
Consultant Team, the consultant will
offer mentoring support and lead the existing clinical team through; one-to-one
support, individual case management and complex cases, identifying development
needs and suggesting CPD (Continuous Professional Development) opportunities
and responding to clinical enquiries via e-mail and telephone.
