Overview
As a SHO (Senior House Officer) you will be working closely with other junior
doctors and a team of registrar’s doctors and Consultants within your
department. You must maintain liaison with colleagues who are on duty
immediately before and after you to ensure adequate communication and
continuity of patient care. You will
instruct the nursing staff in the care of patients, also the professional
technical staffs in the investigations Etc.; that is necessary for patient care
and take care that other departments are fully acquainted with all necessary
information.
The
hospital offers an excellent salary with pay enhancements for any overtime,
shift and out of hours work that you do- average 39 hours per week plus
overtime opportunities as and when required.
You
will be responsible to the Consultant (s) and Registrar(s) for ensuring that
the Department is adequately covered by the juniors in the unavoidable absence
from duty of your colleagues or junior colleagues. The Senior House Officer must be dedicated to
developing their career as the Consultants provide an excellent training
programme as they are devoted to career progression within their medical
staffing team as per your speciality.

General Duties- guideline only
The
duties will be carried out within the Department and working hours will be
negotiated on appointment consistent with the needs of the Acute Medicine Department.
•
He/she will be expected to work with the multidisciplinary team to assess
undifferentiated emergency patients, institute time critical interventions and
to arrange admission or discharge with appropriate follow up. He/She will be
involved in the full spectrum of Acute Medicine Department patients including
the resuscitation & assessment of seriously ill and injured patients,
dealing with complex cases, paediatrics and minor injuries.
•To
actively participate in staff meetings, forums and development programmes in
order to support development of service and maintenance of high quality care.
•He/she
will be expected to work with the multidisciplinary team to assess
undifferentiated emergency patients, institute time critical interventions and
to arrange admission or discharge with appropriate follow up.
•He/she
will recognize their own limitations and seek advice from the Consultants and
Middle grades in their management of patients.
•He/she
will take part in an audit project, supervised by a Consultant

post holder undertakes exceptionally to be available for such irregular
commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of
patient care.
•To
provide safe and effective care of patients.
•He/she
will share the responsibility of ongoing care of patients on the observation
ward

will be encouraged to attend teaching sessions
•Applying
specialist knowledge and skills across a range of impairments, procedures and
practices gained through practical experience, underpinned by theoretical
knowledge.

a continuing responsibility for the care of patients and the functioning of the
department.
•Providing
diagnosis and treatment for all categories of patient in the department.
•He/She
will be involved in the full spectrum of Department patients including the
resuscitation & assessment of seriously ill and injured patients, dealing
with complex cases, paediatrics and minor injuries.
•The
post holder undertakes exceptionally to be available for such irregular

You
will have delegated responsibility for all the patients under the care of the
Consultant to whose firm you are attached at the time, and for the patients of
all the Consultants when undertaking emergency cover or when the other SHOs are
off duty. You will refer to the
Consultant(s) when problems arise which are beyond your authority and/or
experience, and will oversee and advise the House Officers.
Salary
The
salary is based on the national salary scale as outlined in the Medical and
Dental Terms and Conditions and mentioned above.

The

post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with
their relevant area of practice and be able to demonstrate this to the

the continuation of a doctor’s licence to practise in the UK, provides greater
assurance to patients, the public, employers and other healthcare professionals
that licensed doctors are up-to-date and fit to practise. It is a key component
of a range of measures designed to improve the quality of care for
patients.
The
Trust fully supports the GMC’s Revalidation agenda and we have a dedicated
Revalidation Support Team who support the co-ordination of Revalidation and
medical appraisal activity, providing personalised support for all doctors,
which includes the facilitation of 360° Multi-Source Feedback, providing advice
and guidance on completing appraisal documentation and sourcing evidence.
Personal Responsibilities
Infection
Control
All
staff working for the Trust must promote and maintain the highest standards of
Infection prevention and control practice at all times. This includes adhering
to all Trust policies and procedures relating to Infection prevention and
control. These policies include all staff must be ‘bare below the elbow’ when
assessing or treating patients, and washing hands with antibacterial gel
between patients. It is the responsibility of the post-holder to take
reasonable care not to endanger him/herself or anybody else on the premises by
an act or omission.

Procedure
The
post-holder must adhere to the Trust’s Fire Policy.
No
Smoking Policy
This
Trust has adopted a no smoking policy. This restriction applies to patients,
staff and visitors alike. Whilst the Trust will not discriminate against

Confidentiality
All
confidential information, including patient records, individual staff records,

or persons. The penalty for breach of confidentiality will normally be summary
dismissal.
Conflict
of Interest
The
Trust is responsible for ensuring that the service provided for patients in its
care meets the highest standards. Equally, it is responsible for ensuring that
staff do not abuse their official position for personal gain or to benefit
their family or friends. The Trust's Standing Orders require any officer to
declare any interest, direct or indirect, with contracts involving the Trust.
Staff are not allowed to further their private interests in the course of their
NHS duties.
Data
Protection and IM&T Security
If
this post requires you to obtain process and or use information held on a
computer then this must be undertaken in accordance with the Data Protection
Act 1984. This Act requires that you should hold data only for the specific
registered purpose and not use or disclose it in any way incompatible with such
a purpose. In accordance with Trust and Departmental policy you should only
disclose data to an authorised person/s or organisation. Changing data when
unauthorised to do so is forbidden. You must also comply with the Trust’s
IM&T Security and PC Policies which outline an individual responsibility
for all members of staff to ensure the security of information they obtain, use
or process. It outlines your responsibility to maintain the confidentiality and
security of all verbal, written and computerised information. If this post
requires you to use a computer you will also have an individual responsibility
to ensure the security of the software and hardware as well as your password.
Breaches of confidence and security in relation to data or information will
normally result in disciplinary action which may lead to dismissal. Only memory
sticks encrypted by the IM&T department are allowed to be used on any Trust
PC. Internet services within Trust offices are only to be used for official
purposes.
HEPATITIS
B
The
successful candidate will be required to provide documentary evidence of
natural or acquired immunity to Hepatitis B, before taking up employment. Where this is not possible, the post holder
will be required to demonstrate by recent (within the last year) evidence of
serology showing the absence of Hepatitis B surface antigen.
