Hours of Work
ii) provide on-call off-site services outside core and/or overtime hours as determined by the Clinical Director / Employer;
iii) work beyond his/her rostered period in line with the exigencies of the service. The Employer will endeavour to ensure that this will be an exceptional rather than a standard requirement.Overtime payments
Specific Duties
The post would suit a good team player dedicated to high quality patient care. The opportunity exists to work in a non-hierarchical setting and offer a wide range of emergency care procedures in this busy hospital.
The doctors, together with the registrars’ on-call provide a full 24 hr middle grade rota. The doctor will be responsible for the primary management of patients attending the department and for supervising and assisting the more junior grades of doctor. The doctor will also be expected to liaise with the nurse in charge (shift coordinator) to ensure that patients are managed in a safe and timely fashion. They will also be expected to ensure that all patients admitted to the observation beds have an appropriate diagnosis, and they may be required to assist the consultant with morning review of these patients. The doctor will also be expected to lead the trauma team and assist the cardiac arrest team if required. The post holders will also be expected to review the X-ray reports and arrange appropriate follow up for patients with missed fractures.
He/she will be expected to take an active role in the departmental teaching programme for the junior grades. Participation in departmental audits will also be required and an active role in the trauma call audit is expected. The post holder must maintain his/her continuing professional development and will be encouraged to attend relevant professional courses and meetings. There is a weekly grand round which the post holders are encouraged to attend. There is also a monthly X-ray meeting and regular middle grade teaching sessions in the department. The doctors will also be encouraged to attend the monthly regional training days for the emergency medicine trainees. The doctor rota provides one session per week for supporting professional activities. He/she must participate in audit and should register with the appropriate College for CPD. Attendance at APLS and/or EPLS courses will be encouraged.
Standard Duties and Responsibilities
ii) diagnose and treat patients;
iii) ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that prioritises the safety and well being of patients;
iv) assess patients on admission and/or discharge as required and write detailed reports in the case notes;
v) order and interpret diagnostic tests;
vi) initiate and monitor treatment;
vii) communicate effectively with patients and clients;
viii) further progress knowledge of diagnosis and management; ix) participate in multidisciplinary clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information for same; x) co-operate with such arrangements as are put into place to verify the delivery of all contractual commitments;
xi) co-operate with such measures as are necessary to ensure compliance with the requirements of the European Working Time Directive and related Irish legislation;
xii) co-operate with investigations, enquiries or audit relating to the provision of health services; xiii) comply with statutory and regulatory requirements, agreed training principles3 where appropriate, corporate policies and procedures and human resource policies and procedures (e.g. Dignity at Work, Trust in Care, Flexible Working Scheme etc.);
xiv) attend at NCHD Induction. Induction training before the commencement of the employment relationship is not paid, while induction training during the currency of the employment relationship is paid;
xv) perform other duties as required by the supervising Consultant / Clinical Director / Employer.Medical Education and Training
i) participate in and satisfy the requirements of any programme of Intern training (s)he is registered on as defined by the Medical Council of Ireland; or
ii) participate in and satisfy the requirements of any programme of specialist training (s)he is registered on as defined by the relevant postgraduate medical training body recognised by the Medical Council of Ireland; or
iii) participate in and satisfy the requirements of any competence assurance programme (s)he is registered on as defined and delivered by the Medical Council of Ireland and/or a postgraduate medical training body recognised by the Medical Council of Ireland for that purpose.NCHD – (Non Consultant Hospital Doctor)
