Overview

We are delighted to offer a new and exciting opportunity for a
Neurologist to join the Neurology team at our client’s NHS Trust. The position
has become available following the approval of a business case for the review
and innovation of our current services.
The post holder will be joining the Neurology Team which currently
consists of less than full time (LTFT) Neurology Consultants. You will be
responsible for developing acute neurology services including stroke and
developing a subspecialty.
You should possess a CCT (or be within three months of obtaining),
and should be listed on the Specialist Register at the time of taking up the
post. An FRCP will be encouraged. Active participation in Research, Audit and
Teaching is also encouraged and supported. The candidate will need to
demonstrate professional excellence and ability to deliver effective care.
Kent is a county in South East England and one of the home
counties. It borders Greater London to the north-west, Surrey to the west and
East Sussex to the south-west. The county also shares borders with Essex along
the estuary of the River Thames (connected by land via High Speed 1 and the
Dartford Crossing), and with the French department of Pas-de-Calais through the
Channel Tunnel. The county town is Maidstone.
Kent on the south east coast is easily accessible from London in
under an hour by road and rail, mixes coastline and rolling downs and is a
gateway to Europe with ferry crossings and the Channel Tunnel.
Miles of beautiful coast line including the classic White Cliffs
of Dover offer panoramic vistas and views of France.
The coastal nature of Kent has seen scenes of conflict through the
years, with many monuments and 26 castles including Hever Castle, Dover Castle
and Leeds Castle. The Chatham Historic Dockyard established in the 16th century
on the River Medway offer an insight into Kent’s maritime heritage and the
Navy’s past. Visit Chartwell, Churchill’s home, or the gardens as Sissinghurst.
The county of Kent sits on the south east coast bordering Surrey,
East Suffolk and is separated from Essex by the Thames Estuary, crossable via
the QE2 Bridge and Dartford Tunnel. To the North the North Sea and to the
South, the Straits of Dover and the English Channel, Kent being only 21 miles
from France.
The population is approaching 2m, with the county town being
Maidstone. Other significant towns include Canterbury, Dartford, Gillingham and
Tunbridge Wells.
The county has miles of coast line and two Areas of Outstanding
Natural beauty formed by the North Downs and the High Weald and has more
conservation areas than any other county in England.
n 2019, there were 1.9M residents in Kent county with an average
age of 40.9 years. Population density was 498 residents per square kilometer.
Population grew by 17.0% since 2002 and population average age increased by 1.7
years in the same period. Based on Census, there were 2.43 residents per
household in 2011.
Department
The
Neurology Department is developing integrated services with primary care,
stroke, radiology and the regional Neuroscience Centres making greater use of
MDT meetings. Part of this process involves developing inpatient beds to
support inpatient neurology services within the hospital and to support the stroke unit.
The service provide a multitude of
specialist Neurology Services and regularly review services for ways to improve
and offer the best care available to our patients. Some of the services
included in the Neurology specialism at the hospital are listed below:
MDT meetings with Neuroradiology on site
for neurology, Multiple Sclerosis, Neurocognitive impairment & stroke; with
specialist Epilepsy Nurses in community Epilepsy, pregnancy planning and
supervision and Vagal Nerve Stimulation monitoring; Multiple Sclerosis
Specialist Nurses in monitoring, disease modifying drugs including running DMT
infusion service and heart centre induction days among others; Regional MS MDTs;
MDT in Parkinson’s Disease with Hospital PD Specialist Nurses managing
inpatients and community patients; MND with local hospice . Neuro-cognitive
with atypical dementia with Psychiatry, Neuropsychology, community psychiatric
nurse and neurology led to screen new cases & discuss complex management
decisions.
Outpatient Services: The department provides 6 diagnostic general clinics; 7 specialist
clinics including, Epilepsy, MND, MS (2); Parkinson’s disease, neurocognitive
clinic and complex headache and 9 MDTs, 2 in Epilepsy, 2 Neuroradiology, 1 in
Parkinson’s disease, 1 in Motor Neurone Disease, 1 in atypical dementia & 2
in Multiple Sclerosis. There is further Neurology specialist nurse delivered
clinics in epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone
disease and dementia.
Inpatient services: The department has an integrated
electronic referral system for advice and management of inpatient referrals
from within the hospital. This includes all branches of the medicine, surgery,
orthopaedics, obstetrics, acute medicine and the Emergency department. This is
managed with 2 middle grades, 1 of whom is a trainee on the regional Neurology
training programme and 1 of whom is a Trust middle grade position. There is
increasing support for the Stroke (Hyper-acute Unit) ward. A broad range of neurological conditions are
managed including acute conditions, status epilepticus, Acute Inflammatory
Neuropathies with involvement of Intensive Care. The service liaise with the
Lane Fox Unit at GSTT for establishing patients on Domiciliary Ventilation and King’s
College Hospital for acute assessments including Neurophysiology and ventilated
imaging.
Multi-professional Team: Specialist Neurology clinical nurse
specialists support patients with Epilepsy in the community, pre-pregnancy
planning and during pregnancy, Vagal Nerve Stimulation monitoring; with
Multiple Sclerosis in the community, with Tysabri infusions, disease activity
and treatment escalations and in the hospital with acute relapses; with
Parkinson’s Disease, an inpatient monitoring review service; Motor Neurone
Disease with assessment for NIV and gastrostomy decisions; with dementia
managing inpatients and being the guide of community services.

Job Plan
Regular job planning meetings will be undertaken with the post holder to ensure that the appointee is remunerated for any additional activities undertaken and that the job plan accurately reflects the overall workload undertaken by the post holder.

job plan is an illustrative
guide and will be finalised following individual agreement with successful
candidates. Further
discussion on supporting professional activities will depend on the Trust's
requirements and the
individual's particular expertise.

Salary
This
is as described in the Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions, in line with
the Consultant Contract (2003). The current full time salary scale (as of July
2020) ranges from £82,096 - £110,683 a year with eight thresholds.
The on call supplement is Category A and attracts a supplement of 5% of basic
salary.
Office Accommodation
Office accommodation will be provided
for the appointee with secretarial support.
Management Responsibility
All Consultants are required to attend
the monthly Directorate Meetings. Post holders will be expected to share in
administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate. As
part of the Consultant Team, the consultant
will offer mentoring support and lead the existing clinical team
through, one-to-one support, individual case management and complex cases,
identifying development needs and suggesting CPD (Continuous Professional
Development) opportunities and responding to clinical enquiries via e-mail and
telephone.
Teaching/Research
The consultant will be required to
participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior
doctors and in clinical examinations. The post-holder’s contribution to
teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan
review. Teaching will take place during programmed activities and flexibly at
other times.

The consultant will participate in clinical
governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk
management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and
external accrediting bodies. There are 6 half day clinical governance meetings
per annum which substitute regular fixed sessions. There is a weekly consultant
meeting before MDT on Friday to discuss any issues during the week and to plan
for next week.
The post-holder will be required to keep
himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and be
able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.
The Trust supports the requirements for continuing
professional development as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is
committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Medical revalidation is the process by which the
General Medical Council (GMC) confirms the continuation of a doctor’s licence
to practise in the UK, provides greater assurance to patients, the public,
employers and other healthcare professionals that licensed doctors are
up-to-date and fit to practise. It is a key component of a range of measures
designed to improve the quality of care for patients.
The Trust supports Royal College guidance on
provision of mentors for new consultants in line with GMC recommendations. All
newly appointed consultant staff are provided with a list of locally trained
mentors who are available for ongoing support as required.
